Music and Multimedia Composition PhD Marcel Sagesser successfully defended his dissertation “Within the Grid: Inquiries in the Socio-Rhythmic Ambiguities of Mechanical Time.” In his doctoral research, he investigates rhythm with an interdisciplinary framework that encompasses the socio-cultural background of groove and the politics of playing along mechanical time. His artistic practice ranges from “living installations” with human performers carrying sound objects through outdoor sites, to multimedia solo performances that he calls “post techno beat music.” 

Dr. Sagesser starts a new job in January 2022 as Assistant Professor in Media Arts and Technology in the School of Design at the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, China. Congratulations and best of luck in Shenzen, Marcel!
