David was passionate about his students and his teaching. Often he said that teaching sustained him. In his final days he was visited by many former students whose lives were impacted by his teaching. He was grateful beyond words for everyone's understanding, kindness, and support. He will be deeply missed by all of us in the Brown community.
Two years ago, David was featured in a blog post and video published by the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to demonstrate the ways Dana-Farber employs social work to help cancer patients. The video is a touching vignette that showcases both David's resilient spirit and his passion for life and music.
Memorial Event
A memorial and celebration of life will be held on September 14, 2019 in Grant Recital Hall at Brown University. Event details are still to be determined, but they will be posted on this website when available. About David Rubinstein's Career as a Musician
David received his B.M. from the New School of Music as a student of Jascha Brodsky. He continued his Masters studies at the New England Conservatory of Music as a student of Walter Trampler. He also studied with David and Linda Cerone, and studied chamber music with Orlando Cole, Eugene Lehner, Eric Rosenblith, Colin Carr and Louis Krasner. David was an orchestra fellow of both Tanglewood Institute and the Spoleto Music Festival.
As an orchestra musician, David was a substitute violist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops, and had toured Europe, South America, Asia and the United States with both those groups. David was a member of the Boston Pops Esplanade orchestra for many years, and was principal violist of the Boston Philharmonic, under Ben Zander, and the new music group Alea III. David also performed as recitalist and chamber musician with the Martha Vineyard chamber music society and the Atlanta Virtuosi.
David taught violin, viola and chamber music at the New England Conservatory Preparatory Department and was String Department Chair of the Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic. In the summers David taught at the Killington Music Festival and the Foulgers International Music Festival. David gave Masterclasses at Northwestern Univ., New York University, Penn State and Hartt School of Music. David’s students have won multiple competitions including the concerto competition at Brown University.
