Mariateresa Magisano

Biography

“With a background in vocal pedagogy and a career built primarily in opera, my teaching is deeply informed by my experience as a performer. As an applied voice teacher, I aim to equip each student with essential vocal skills while nurturing their individual potential and artistic identity. My goal is to inspire singers to grow, not only technically, but expressively and authentically as musicians.”

Soprano, Mariateresa Magisano joined the Department of Music at Brown University in 2021 as a Teaching Associate in Voice, a position she continues to hold while also serving as Interim Director of the Voice Division in the Applied Music Program.

Magisano holds a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from McGill University and a Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. Her advanced training includes renowned programs at the Juilliard Opera Center, Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Tanglewood Music Center, Aldeburgh Festival/Britten-Pears School, Aspen Music Festival, Ravinia Festival, and Vancouver Opera’s Young Artist Program. 

In addition to her academic career, Magisano is a national winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She began her professional operatic career with Vancouver Opera and has since performed extensively across North America in opera, concert, and recital.  She has collaborated with esteemed organizations such as New York City Opera, Arizona Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Opera Columbus, Vancouver Opera, L’Opéra de Montréal, Calgary Opera, Opera Lyra Ottawa, the Buffalo Philharmonic, San Francisco Opera Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Ottawa Chamber Music Society, I Musici de Montréal, and the Vancouver Recital Society.

Throughout her career, Magisano has brought to life a wide range of operatic roles, including Liù (Turandot), Mimì (La Bohème), Micaëla (Carmen), Rosina (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Cenerentola (La Cenerentola), Beth (Little Women), and Kitty Hart (Dead Man Walking). Her Mozart repertoire spans both soprano and mezzo roles, including Susanna, the Contessa, Cherubino, Zerlina, Dorabella, and Despina. She has also performed both Hänsel and Gretel in Humperdinck’s beloved fairy-tale opera

A passionate advocate for new music, Magisano has premiered and recorded contemporary works with the Vancouver Chamber Choir (CBC Records), Chor Leoni Male Choir (Skylark Records), and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Notably, she created the role of Ida McKinley in Shot, an opera by American composer Persis Vehar.

Magisano is actively committed to leadership and mentorship within the vocal community. She serves on the Board of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) for both the Boston Chapter, as Associate Director of Membership, and the New England Region, where she also coordinates the Connections Mentorship Program.
